St Helens as a town only came into being during the nineteenth century, although the area had been occupied since pre-Roman times by Celtic tribe called the Brigantes
In the thirteenth century, the Knights Hospitallers owned land in the area. It is recorded that in the sixteenth century, St Helens was a Chapel of Ease dedicated to St Elyn
In 1852 the civil parish of St Helens was instituted. In 1868, Queen Victoria bestowed St Helens a Charter of Incorporation, so making the town a Municipal Borough
