Wallasey is located at the mouth of the River Mersey on high ground which was once an island. The name is derived from 'walha' meaning 'stranger' and 'ey' meaning 'island'
The early village grew up around St Hilary's Church
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, horse races were run on the sands nearby as entertainment for the earls of Derby
In the nineteenth century, grand houses were built in the New Brighton area for rich merchants from Liverpool
New docks were built in Wallasey in 1842, so bringing prosperity to the area
